Games-Based Learning Experiences report

Games-Based Learning Experiences: Testing the principles with teachers and students

This paper outlines the findings from three workshops with teachers and students in which they:
  • give feedback on the relative importance of key learning elements identified in digital games
  • explore how these elements could be used to support the creation of games-based learning experiences in formal education settings.
The workshops were designed to explore how the previous research within this project which identified learning elements from digital games (Bober 2010) could be applied in formal education settings and used as the basis for games-based learning experiences that did not have to include digital games. The teacher workshops identified tools through which these principles could be applied. However, teacher availability meant they did not use these tools to create a games-based experience.

The paper describes: the participants, the workshop activities, the findings of the workshops, and in particular teacher and student attitudes towards each of the key learning elements and which they felt were most important to include if creating games-based learning experiences for the classroom.

TEXT2SPEECH: A Free, Online, Text To Speech Converter

TEXT2SPEECH is an easy to use, text to speech converter.
There was a time when text-to-speech conversion tools were looked upon with the same awe as 3D video and, were about as rare. No longer. Several free tools have emerged recently which do a decent conversion job. One of them (sort of) is TEXT2SPEECH. Like most online tools, this one has good and not so good features.

Swiffy From Google : convert SWF files to HTML5

Swiffy converts Flash SWF files to HTML5, allowing you to reuse Flash content on devices without a Flash player (such as iPhones and iPads).
Swiffy currently supports a subset of SWF 8 and ActionScript 2.0, and the output works in all Webkit browsers such as Chrome and Mobile Safari. If possible, exporting your Flash animation as a SWF 5 file might give better results.

Web Presenting

Pre-recorded webinar from m62′s own Chas Williams, looking at how to present over the Internet.

Presenting over the web can mean your message gets to a wider audience over a greater geographical area, reduces time spent travelling, makes it easier for audience members to attend, and reduces cost. But presenting over the Internet is not easy – the presenter can’t see their audience, and the audience can be doing other things as well as (or instead of) paying attention.
What techniques should presenters use to take advantage of web presentation technology?

Google Sites Go Mobile

A poor mobile web experience can negatively shape a consumer’s opinion of your brand or your company altogether.  In a recent study, we found that 61% of users are unlikely to return to a mobile site that they had trouble accessing from their phone, and 40% go to a competitor’s.  By the end of this year, more than half of all Americans will own a smartphone. Your customers are mobile, are you ?

Noteworthy elearning PowerPoint Template

With a budget you can hire a graphic artist who can come up with some different design ideas for your elearning courses. But that’s not the case for many of us.  So we’re usually stuck with courses that all start to look the same.
One reason is the same person is designing all of the courses. For the most part, we tend to stick with the same design ideas and are limited by our graphic design skills.  And because of that, we get courses that all kind of look the same.

Adobe Captivate 5.5: Publish Support for Apple Mobile Devices

Anyone who created eLearning lessons using any version of Adobe Captivate older than version 5 is painfully aware that Captivate does not offer publishing options for any of the Apple mobile devices (iPhone, iPad or iPod). It's been a real issue for developers who love Captivate, but are required to create content for the Apple devices, and are therefore forced to use other tools such as Camtasia.
The new Adobe Captivate 5.5 eliminates the issue. You can now record new Captivate videos specifically for Apple devices, and you can re-publish existing content so that it will run on Apple devices.

Stick Pick is an iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad teacher tool

This a great tool.
Stick Pick is an iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad “teacher tool” application that allows you to randomly (or intentionally) draw a student’s name from an on-screen can of popsicle sticks -- but that’s just the beginning. You determine the mode and level of difficulty for each learner, and then, every time that student’s stick is drawn, you’ll be shown over a dozen Bloom’s-style question stems -- uniquely tied to your learner’s individual ability level!
Stick Pick offers over 140 question stems, organized by cognitive and linguistic level, so teachers can quickly and conveniently ask the right question to the right learner at just the right time. With Stick Pick teachers promote higher order thinking skills, English language development, and equity among learners of all levels.

HTML5 and its Role in e-Learning

Google and New Search Features

Google on Tuesday introduced three new search features that make it clear mobile technologies are leading the way in new developments from the search giant.

Voice Search
One of the technologies driving this growth is speech recognition. With Voice Search, you don’t have to type on a tiny touchscreen. You can just speak your query and the answer is on the way.

Search by Image
Today we’re introducing Search by Image on desktop. Next to the microphone on images.google.com, you’ll also see a little camera for the new Search by Image feature. If you click the camera, you can upload any picture or plug in an image URL from the web and ask Google to figure out what it is

Instant Pages
Whether you type, speak or upload a photo, once you’ve indicated what you’re looking for the next step in your search is to sift through the results and pick one. To make this faster, last year we introduced Google Instant, which gives you search results while you type.
